About This Item
Pearson and Rollason, Birmingham for R Baldwin, Pater-Noster-Row; B White, Fleet-Street; J Robson, New-Bond-Street; and S Hayes, Oxford-Road, London, 1784. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 480 pages plus armorial chart (complete). A pleasing copy of this eager biography of the protectorate Cromwell's. However, the book, written by Rev Noble in his extensive leisure hours, was (according to his obituary in "The Gentleman's Magazine") "So unfortunately numerous were the errors of this compilation, that Mr Gough, whose attentions was soon after directed to the same subject, occupies fourteen quarto pages of Preface to his 'Short Genealogical View of the Family of Oliver Cromwell ...) in little more than exposing Mr Noble's errors. The latter, however, was not discouraged from the work to which he was certainly unequal ...". This copy then, is the infamous edition! Half leather. Marbled boards. The leathered corners and spine are considerably worn all over and about. The marbled boards too, are worn, scuffed, marked from age, storage and handling. The boards and spine are heroically certain. The contents are most pleasing. The first free page has a previous owner signature. Apart from expected age marks here and there (few in number and shallow in impact), the pages are clean, clear, congenial, neat, agreeably generous, hearteningly hale. fk.
