(UK) First Thus No markings, to pages, the preliminaries are foxed, the spine edges are split and have been repaired, the ead and foot of the spine are worn away, Acceptable used copy with solid hinges; no dust jacket. Embossed brown boards, 546pp, index. No illus. This present edition contains the entire work as edited by Scott in 1811. Phibert de Gramont (b. 1621). He was exiled from Paris for courting one of the mistresses of te rench king and established himself in London at the Court of Charles II. There he married Elizabeth Hamilton, one of the great beauties of the English court, whose brother, Anthony, is the author of this memoir. It was said of Gramont that he was able to pursue gallantries well into old age without looking ridiculous. He was over 80 when he provided his brother-in-law with the papers for writing his memoirs. These memoirs remain a source of information about the court and is a masterpiece of style and wit. (1.8 JM HOQ 101/3. Hardcover. Acceptable/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾".
