Hardcover. Very Good. Dr. Ullmannâs last book was The Medieval Idea of Law as represented by Lucas de Penna and it is likely that the present one will be equally welcomed by students of medieval history. This book, which contains the Maitland Memorial Lectures of 1948, approaches the problem of State and Church in the Middle Ages from a new angle. It sets out to depict the canonistic background of medieval papal policy, for medieval popes and their cardinal advisers were first and foremost canonists. The author not only shows how and why the medieval popes pursued a policy of world domination, but also discloses the ideas by which the papal monarchs were primarily influenced. The prominent part played by the medieval English canonists in shaping papal policy is here examined and set forth for the first time. Relying as the book does on the original sources, printed and unprinted, it contributes to a better understanding of medieval history. The basic and often surprisingly modern tenets of the medieval canonists played a conspicuous role in the making of Western civilization. Very good--hardcover with dust jacket--book is clean and neat--jacket is toned and chipped along the edges, now in a new, clear, archival-quality Brodart jacket protector.
