About This Item

Great Britain: Webb & Bower. Very Good/Very Good. 1980. First Edition. Cloth. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall 0906671140 Hardback Hardback. First Edition. Slightly sunned spine to D/J. Slight scratch to front D/J. In August 1620 the Mayflower and the Speedwell set sail from Southampton, England bearing Nonconformist fugitives from the religious bigotry of England and ominous political developments in Holland. Delayed by several alse starts, owing to the unseaworthiness of the Speedwell, the Mayflower eventually set sail alone for America from Plymouth on September 6th. The voyage was difficult and often dangerous, and on the over-crowded vessel one Pilgrim died, several came close to death, and a single child was born. On November 11th, the ship dropped anchor in Province-town Harbour, Cape Cod. The Pilgrim Fathers' troubles did not end there. The land was hostile and winter was fast approaching. They found amore fabourable site for settlement at Plymouth, but still had to contend with severe shortages (many were to perish during that first winter), tense relations with the local Indians, and difficulties with other colonies. However, with remarkable fortitude they survived these adversities and eventually succeeded in establishing a stable colony. Their story is truly an epic one. This account, exploring as it does the personalities and motives of the protagonists, goes futher than a conventional history and has all the excitement of the very best adventure novels. Illustrated. 200 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) .
