E. Ducher Every month during the latter years of the 19th century (the publication is undated and little bibliographical information exists) E. Ducher in Paris issued a numbered, eight-page, 4to installment of lithographed line illustrations of architectural and sculptural details grouped around a central topic, e.g. Fountains. They were issued in no particular order, but were apparently expected to be bound alphabetically by topic when the collection was complete. The central headings were in French with English and German alternatives included (Fountain - Fountaine - Brunnen). This particular volume is alphabetized in English starting with installment number 104, Candelabra, through number 20, Confessionals (a special 12-page installment). It contains 34 installments for a total of 276 pp. The page numbers have been carefully rubber-stamped in the upper corners. The binding, though worn, is tight. The FFE is barely attached. There is no title page, nor was there ever one. The first page is present, but detached. This volume was owned by a major university, and though it did not circulate, was obviously consulted often during the past 100+ years. There are tears (usually repaired), smudges, and other signs of use. An inch or so of atmospheric browning surrounds the pages. Perhaps because it has 112 pages of capitals, it saw more use than the other volumes in this series. There is definitely more damage to the pages. All things considered, however, the research value of this treasure trove of design and ornamentation remains undiminished. It is enclosed in a custom archival box.
