About This Item
Philadelphia: Oswald Train, 1971. First edition thus: facsimile reprint. Association copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the publisher, "For my friend Allen J. Hubin, a/ belated token of a very pleasant/ visit here in Phialadelphia. This/ is the first copy, out of the first/ carton. With sincere admiration/ of a great guy who is doing a/ great job with The Armchair Detective./ Oswald Train/ Philadelphia/ June 17, 1971." Hubin is founder the first U.S. magazine devoted to crime fiction, The Armchair Detective, and compiler of a well-known bibliography of that genre. As such, one might imagine him letting this particular book go -- not only because it's a reprint -- but also due to the fact that although it states "First published, 1904" on the copyright page, it is clearly a facsimile reprint sans illustrations of a later printing of the 1907 Harper & Brothers edition as evidenced by the broken type on first page of text. Near fine in near fine dust jacket.
