The Early Years, focuses on Buber's road to I and Thou, the classic work that is generally agreed to be the first fully mature expression his his thought. Buber's loss of his mother as a child; his activity in cultural and political Zionism; his encounter with mysticism and discovery of Hasidism; and his work in post-World War I education, community, and politics -- all these were necessary steps toward his deep understanding of the relation between life and thought. And it was Buber's response to the crisis of post-war Europe that produced the most important work of this part of his life.
