About This Item
Portland, Me.: J. Chace Jr., & Co., 1861.. Wall map, 62 1/2 x 61 inches, with full period hand-coloring. Mounted on canvas with wooden roller at top of map (bottom roller lacking). Some tearing and wear at bottom edge. Coated uniformly with a yellow shellac. Good. [with:] A BUSINESS DIRECTORY OF THE SUBSCRIBERS TO THE NEW MAP OF MAINE.... Portland. [1861]. 344pp. Original publisher's cloth. Lightly worn and faded at extremities. Very minor foxing. About very good. An impressive and immensely detailed map of the state of Maine, incorporating the work of the British and American Boundary Commissioners Survey, the U.S. Coast Survey, the State Land Surveys, and the New Brunswick Provincial Surveys. Drawn on a scale of five miles to an inch, the chart shows all the counties and cities in the state, and minutely delineates the coastline. Several cities are shown in inset maps: Portland, Calais, Presque Isle, Houlton, Ellsworth, Bangor, Eastport, Machias, Bath, Farmington, Dover and Foxcroft, Paris Hill, Skowhegan, Waterville, Hallowell, Wiscasset, Gardiner, Augusta, Waldboro, Brunswick, Thomaston, Rockland, Auburn and Lewiston, and Saco and Biddeford. Also included is a table of distances and an engraving showing the mountains of Maine with their height in feet. A rather large inset map shows the United States, and a smaller one shows the world. Phillips' MAPS and Rumsey list an 1862 edition, but not the present one.
This is Walling's first map of Maine, and so misses by a year inclusion in Thompson's bibliography of Maine maps. RUMSEY 1153. PHILLIPS, MAPS, p.385 (both for 1862 ed).
