Gotha: Justus Perthes , 1878. Fine, extraordinarily detailed chart of Europe and Most of russia. Elaborate coastal details, with depth soundings and corresponding isolines in vicinity of North Sea. Also detailed in regions of Black Sea and Caspian Sea. Topogrpahical detail of Europe is extensive. Shows Iceland, Gibraltar Strait. Elaborate coastal detail around British Isles. Striking original printed color. You need to see this to appreciate the technical expertise involved in the production of this map from this time. It comes from Petermann's "Geographische Mitteilungen". Petermann was a major figure in the 19th century explosion of thematic mapping (see Robinson: EARLY THEMATIC MAPPING...). He apprenticed with Steiler and later helped with the maps of Johnston's PHYSICAL ATLAS... (initially issued as a tribute to Berghaus). The map measures 9.75x7.75 inches. .
