London: Macmillan and Co., 1882. xxviii, 447pp, [1]. With an engraved folding map (frontispiece) and a further 28 line maps in the text. Handsomely bound by Bickers and Son in contemporary gilt-tooled calf, contrasting red and green morocco lettering-pieces, marbled edges. A trifle rubbed. Marbled endpapers, binder's stamp and inked prize inscription to verso of FFEP. A handsome copy of the first edition of John Richard Green's (1837-1883) authoritative history of England, which made extensive use of both geography and archaeology, substantial innovations for the time. . First edition. 8vo.
