About This Item

London England: Burns & Oates, 1956. Hardback. First Edition. The Maid of Orleans. Slight foxing to edge. Message to previous owner to inside cover. Slight wear and a repair to edge of D/J. Price clipped to D/J. Translated From the Swedish by Eric Lewenhaupt. The author sees Joan of Arc as a mystic and her sprume achievement and final significance, not merely, or even primarily, in the mission to deliver France, but in her share in the Passion of Christ. She was not the heroine who throughout triumphantly maintained the truth she knew, despite all her enemies could do, but one who was so worn down and weakened by her long ordeal of human fears that she recanted, withdrew her recanation only when the promises made were broken, dounted her voices on the morning of her execution and recovered sertaintly only at the stake. And in this, the author points out, she is akin to the broken, confused and half-yielding martyrs of the Communist brain-washing methods. Stolpe recreates vividly the contemporary stituation in France, evaluates into the Maid's life, interpreting the authorities in a fresh, penetrating light. 311 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.). First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Harcover.
