Bookplate on front pastedown "Fred B. Butler". Some marginalia on title page. ; xlviii, 332 pages + extra title page with vignette illustration + 13 in-text wood engravings. Lacking the colour frontipiece "Destruction of the 'Tanjore'". Original green blind-stamped cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Page dimensions: 188 x 108mm. Top page edges gilt. The first edition was published in 1829 with the title: "Personal Narrative of a Mission to the South of India, from 1820 to 1828". This second edition of 1844 has a new preface by the author, and additional material on the history of missions in India.
