About This Item
Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc,, 1951. First US edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Mr and Mrs Sanderson from the author Enid Bagnold Jan. 1951". Bagnold, best-known for her novel National Velvet, here explores crises of middle age among the fading class of expatriate aristocrats living in France in the 1950s; the protagonist is believed to be based on the well-known London socialite Lady Diana Cooper. Octavo. Original buff cloth, spine lettered in grey on red ground, fore edge untrimmed. With illustrated dust jacket. Spine ends and outer edge of front cover bumped, offsetting to endpapers. A very good copy in like dust jacket, spine tanned, spine ends and corners chipped and creased, extremities rubbed, a touch of soiling to rear panel, otherwise a bright example.
