About This Item

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1951. First American edition. First American edition. Signed by Josephine Tey on the front free endpaper, warmly inscribed in a miniscule hand "For Felicity, with love, Josephine Tey." [vi], 210 pp. Bound in grey cloth with turquoise stamping. Very Good+ with lean to spine, light shelf wear, in a Very Good dust jacket with chipping to extremities and a few small closed tears, unclipped ($2.75).

A very rare signed novel by the acclaimed Scottish mystery author Elizabeth MacKintosh (1896-1952), who wrote under the pen names Josephine Tey and Gordon Daviot. Features Scotland Yard Inspector Alan Grant. Tey was reclusive all her life but especially so in her final year when this copy would have been signed; she shunned even her friends and did not let them know she was terminally ill. Her novel Daughter of Time has been called the greatest mystery of all time.

Synopsis

JOSEPHINE TEY is one of the best-known and best-loved of all crime writers. She began to write full-time after the successful publication of her first novel, The Man in the Queue , which introduced Inspector Grant of Scotland Yard. In 1937 she returned to crime writing with A Shilling for Candles , but it wasn't until after the Second World War that the majority of her crime novels were published. Josephine Tey died in 1952, leaving her entire estate to the National Trust.
