About This Item
London: Hamish Hamilton, 1949. A first edition, first printing published by Hamish Hamilton in 1949. A very good book without inscriptions - SIGNED and inscribed to 'Roland Carpenter/from Nancy Mitford' to the front endpaper with a small patch of rubbing just under the inscription - Carpenter's bookplate to the front pastedown. With a little dulling to the gilt titles on the spine. In a very good unclipped wrapper with wear and loss to the corners. A small professional internal repair to the top of the front panel. Some chipping to the spine tips and corners. Some creasing. Signed and inscribed copies of this title are scarce.
Synopsis
In one of the wittiest novels of them all, Nancy Mitford casts a finely gauged net to capture perfectly the foibles and fancies of the English upper class. Set in the privileged world of the county house party and the London season, this is a comedy of English manners between the wars by one of the most individual, beguiling and creative users of the language.
