In 1891, John McKee Verhoeff of Louisville, embarked with Robert E. Peary on an expedition to the North Pole, as the official mineralogist and meteorologist. Of the entire party, Verhoeff was the only one who did not return, and his death has been the source of speculation that persists even today..
