The in place educational system elevated his rise to a uncomfortably marginal position on the borderline of not-quite middle class from which he watches traditional possessors of privilege being favoured for the better jobs he aspires to and yet excusing himself for un-groomed hair, dirty sweaters, and other unattractive modes of social behavior. Angry & self-righteous Porter does his middle-class wife violence, locks her in the attic, betrays her, and is coldly indifferent when his wife gives birth to a dead child ---- and, is yet beloved of two women.
