Allan Sillitoe's renowned short story collection, featuring his award-winning title, 'The Loneliness of the Long-distance Runner'. The story follows a working class Nottingham teenager who turns to long-distance running as a coping mechanism for his life's difficulties. It won the Hawthornden Prize of 1959, and was adapted into a 1962 coming-of-age film directed by Tony Richardson. Other titles in this collection include, 'Uncle Ernest', 'Noah's Ark', and, 'The Match'. Alan Sillitoe was an English writer, often described as part of the 'angry young men', a group of working-class British novelists, of the 1950s. He is best known for his short story, 'The Loneliness of the Long-distance Runner', and for his debut novel, 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning'. Synopsis

Alan Sillitoe was born in 1928, the son of a tannery worker. He left school at age fourteen to work in a factory. He was one of the working-class novelists who revitalized British fiction in the 1950s. His first novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning was followed with the bestselling collection The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner . He adapted both works for the screen in the early 1960s. He is the author of more than 40 works of prose, poetry, and drama.
