About This Item

Newcastle: John Sykes Bookseller, 1824. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 9" by 5.5". Not Stated. An uncommon first edition documenting remarkable events in the North-East of England between AD120 and AD1799. First edition, in a half calf binding with marbled boards. This work was originally published in two volumes; this is volume one. Written by John Sykes. This volume includes local records and historical events which have occured in Durham, Northumberland, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Berwick-upon-Tweed between the years AD120 and AD1799. The second volume of the work covered the same area between AD1800 and AD1832. Sykes documented these events in order to encourage local people to regard the history of their county. With charming vignettes to accompany the text and an additional illustrated title page. With the bookplate of Christopher Harrison to the front paste down. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the extremities and spine. The odd mark to the leather and the boards. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with light spotting to the first and last pages. Very Good
