Born in Ireland in 1918 to Ireland's Chief Rabbi in the midst of the violent Irish Revolution, he spent his formative years in the Irish-Jewish ghetto, the ghetto of James Joyce's Leopold Bloom, before being sent to school in Palestine. He returned to fight for Britain in World War II, helping to liberate the German concentration camps, one of the first outside witnesses to the atrocities of the Holocaust. In his role as a British officer he was present for the surrender of Heinrich Himmler. He returned to Palestime a Zionist dedicated to the formation of the state of Israel. Chaim Herzog has been present at nearly all the great and tragic events in the life of Israel, as a soldier, politician, journalist, leader or observer.
