About This Item
James Field,, 1855. 8vo., First Edition, with engraved frontispiece, and engraved and printed titles; original red coarse-grain roan, boards and backstrip elaborately framed and blocked in gilt, gilt edges, primrose endpapers, backstrip scored, gatherings loose at N (but binding wholly sound), a remarkably bright, clean copy. Collects some 60 biographies and accounts of war service from Raglan down to decorated cornets and ensigns. Ryan credited Cardigan with little heroism (his controversial 'Was Lord Cardigan a Hero at Balaklava?' was published later the same year). VERY SCARCE. Astonishingly, not recorded by Turan.
