About This Item
Donington: Shaun Tyas, 2018. Book. Fine. Hardback. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A fine new copy. 672 pp. 700 pictures. The book was the life's work of the author, who died leaving it unfinished in 1997, though complete in draft. It was a subject on which he had lectured and contributed many ground-breaking articles in scholarly journals. It is now published for the first time, edited, introduced, indexed and slightly expanded by the publisher. The book is a unique survey which studies houses old and new, large and small, throughout the old county of Lincolnshire, and does so analytically, with chapters on walls, roofs, building materials, plans, façades, staircases, doors etc, making it an invaluable guide to the whole broad range of the county's houses, and even an excellent introduction to architecture in general. There is a section of colour pictures, some 202 plans and a great many black and white photographs of historical interest, many showing houses which have since been changed or destroyed. A wonderful, exciting survey which will open the reader's eyes to the beauty of Lincolnshire's architecture, from grand houses like Belton and Harlaxton, to mud-and-stud thatched cottages and the extraordinary fen artisan mannerism..
