About This Item

North Sydney, NSW: Georg Allen and Unwin, 1985. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The jacket is lightly shelfstained and lightly knocked at the edges; the front end paper has been clipped at the head, presumably to remove an ownership inscription, and the tail has an address stamp. Overall a clean, unmarked and solid copy. "Lilian's Story was her first published novel (1985) and won The Australian/Vogel Literary Award. It was loosely based on the story of Bea Miles, known in Sydney for her eccentric public behaviour. It has become one of Australia's best-loved novels and in 1996 was made into a film starring Ruth Cracknell and Toni Collette; Collette won the Australian Film Institute award for supporting actress for her performance as the young Lilian." Synopsis

Madness, cruelty, and sexuality permeate the household in which Lilian Una Singer is raised-an upper-crust Victorian world of teacups and servants. But Lilian, shielded by layers of fat, an iron will, and an indomitable spirit, has her sights set on an education, love, and-finally-her own transcendent forms of independence.
