About This Item

Chapel HIll, NC: The University of North Carolina Press, 2001. First printing [stated]. Hardcover. Very good in very good dust jacket. DJ is in a plastic sleeve.. xvii, [3] 455 p. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. Bibliography. Index. This is one of the Civil War America series. Commonly portrayed in Civil War literature as a bungling general who disgraced himself at Fort Donelson, Gideon Johnson Pillow (1806-78) is one of the most controversial military figures of 19th Century America. He was one of Tennessee's wealthiest planters and lawyers; his friendship with James K. Polk led him to a generalship in the Mexican War. Years later, when Civil War broke out, Pillow organized the Army of Tennessee. This book is a wonderful biography of Gideon Pillow, telling of his many abilities and triumphs as well as his many mistakes that led to much heartache.
