Southey is rememberd today as a romantic poet, but he also wrote prose works such as this life of Nelson. Far from being objective, Southey describes his subject as the ideal national hero. In fact, Nelson is Patriotism personified as a man, and the illustrations by Richard Westall add to the romance of the portrayal. Note bookplate of Claude Campbell Savage of London, Ontario, an associate of the London firm Ivey, Elliott and Gillanders who became Crown Attorney for Middlesex County in 1943.
