Description:
Dundee and London: John Long & Co, Ltd., 1903. 1st Edition. Paperback. We have never before seen or heard of a copy of this very early pamphlet, which is previously unknown to Churchill bibliographers Ronald Cohen and Fredrick Woods. The subject is the great policy debate of the time - free trade vs. protectionism. The pamphlet contains 25 items described in the preface as "principal arguments advanced by leading speakers in the Fiscal Controversy". Churchill's contribution is a condensation of his article in the November 1903 issue of Monthly Review (Cohen C224, Woods C32). It appears on pages 34 and 35 of the pamphlet under the title "Retaliation Examined" and is introduced with a brief summary of the subject and a small profile drawing of Churchill. In the article, Churchill takes issue with Balfour's Sheffield speech of early October 1903 in which Balfour advocated a retaliatory tariff. This was a critical argument at a critical time for Churchill. Free Trade was the policy issue that… Read More

Description:
LONDON: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1811 Works selected by William Coxe presented in 2 volumes (volume 2 has 2 parts), bound in one. Volume 1 covers his literary life; volume 2 his poems, dramas and sonnets and his natural history works. Benjamin Stillingfleet is believed to be the originator of the term 'blue stocking' - being invited by Elizabeth Montagu and Elizabeth Vesey to talk at their literary and discussion circle but being too poor to afford to wear the required black stockings to the event. it is suggested that his blue worsted stockings became his trademark - and then eventually the term for learned women. He studied at Cambridge and became tutor to William Windham, whom he accompanied on the Grand Tour, engaging in scientific exploration of Alpine glaciers. He wrote the first fundamental treatise in England advocating Linnaean principles in classifying plants and has a plant named after him: Stillingia sylvatica. He was apparently the librettist for oratorios by… Read More

This book is in fairly good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards, as well as spots on the outside back cover board. There is minimal bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, with some vertical fraying and warping, but the pages are clear of markings. A few of the pages are dog-eared and edges torn. "The Forsyte Saga was the title originally destined for that part of it which is called 'The Man of Propery; and to adopt it for the collected chronicles of the Forsyte family has indulged the Forsytean tenacity that is in all of us. The word Saga might be objected to on the ground that it connotes the heroic and that there is little of heroism in these pages. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt-edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).

No longer having to defend the Nazi-Soviet Pact of non-aggression, the CPGB and its members were able to return to their anti-fascist stance and activities. Consequently, this development translated itself into the Party's activities and political strategy. This short pamphlet reflects these changes. As the title indicates the CPGB threw itself whole-heartedly into the war effort to defeat the Axis powers and each of the pamphlet's sections resonates with the need and urgency for action.
Issues covered include:
- The Affiliation Campaign [i.e. the CPGB's request to the Labour Party to become an affiliated organisation]
- Strengthening and Extending Party Organisation
- The 16th Congress [CPGB Congress… Read More
