About This Item

London: John Slark, 1886. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. John Slark,1886. The Temple Edition. Six volume set about the great essayist ranging from good to fair. Hard Cover. . Half leather with marbled boards and four raised spine-bands. Spines are decorated and lettered with gilt. Inside covers are marbled. Top edges gilt. Bindings are all slightly shaken but good. Hinges are all perfect. All volumes exhibit moderate edgewear and corners that are rubbed, some rubbed through. Some foxing on all end papers. All pages are clean and unmarked, slightly toned. Volume I: VERY slight warp to boards, moderate edgewear. Leather of spine is cracking and chipping over spine bands and is chipping along exterior hinges. Some foxing to fly leafs (front and rear) and half-title page. Frontispiece with intact tissue. 'Inscription' from Lamb below frontispiece is printed, not signed.Volume II: Leather on spine is off, but binding is still together; hinges are perfect, and the book is still bound. Moderate edgewear. Two small (less than 2 inches long) horizontal scratches on bottom of front cover. Last page of text is slightly foxed. Volume III: Medium-sized (1.5 inch x 1.5 inch) section of leather missing from top of spine. Leather is cracking along spine-bands and spine edges. Volume IV: Leather is cracked through at spine-bands, two thumbnail-sized pieces are missing, and the top two sections cordoned off by the spine-bands are now flaps (have separated at the back edge but not the front). Volume V: Leather on spine is heavily cracked; top fifth of spine is missing a section, bottom fifthof spine is cracked wide open, leather over spine bands are cracking. Rear cover is breaking off. Interior hinge is still good, but back edge of spine leather is starting to break. Volume VI: Leather is peeling off of spine in all sections; top section is missing entirely, half of the next section down is gone (with most of the title information). Front board is mostly separated from spine. Worst condition of the lot. Overall this is a very nice set of books - would be lovely if restored.
