London: George Cawthorne, 1798. Dublin-born Edmund Burke (1729-1797), orator and political theorist, is regarded as the founder of modern conservatism. Although an Anglican, he supported Catholic emancipation. He was sympathetic to the American colonies, but did not support revolution either there or in France. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Edition, published in the year following Burke's death. A rare title. Smooth calf binding, ruled in gilt, with red spine labels. Clean text; xvi, 592 pages; frontis engraving of Burke. Lovely soft laid paper, very bright and clear; pencil signature (1939) on second free endpaper. Unfortunately, the connections are loose and the spine is partially demolished. Considering the fine textblock, this is an excellent candidate for a nice rebind. Please note the condition issues; Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of repair or restoration. . First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
