About This Item
London: Rivingtons, 1852. Cloth. Good. 9" by 7". None. A new edition of George Cavendish's biography of the sixteenth century statesman and catholic bishop, Cardinal Wolsey. A new edition of George Cavendish's biography of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. An interesting biography of the fifteenth century statesman and Catholic bishop. At one point, Wolsey was King Henry VIII's chief advisor, before falling out of favour following his failure to annul the king's marriage with Catherine of Aragon. As well as detailing the political machinations of the time, the biography also offers a detailed portrait of early sixteenth century court life. Cavendish worked under the Cardinal and it is believed that he took notes of Wolsey's conversations and movements for several years before writing the biography between 1554 and 1558. With two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. In the publisher's original brown cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, more so to the spine. Bumped to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. There is a small tear in the cloth to the head and tail of the rear joint. The hinges are starting, but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the gutter is visible at a couple of points. Pages are bright and clean. Good
