London: Longmans, Green, and Co, 1885. Seventh Edition. Hardcover. Beautiful condition, clean and tight but with light rubbing to spine fore edge and a few other small scuffs to covers. Art museum ex-lib. bookplate and pocket. No stamps. Also a starting crack in the front gutter.. Dark brown full leather binding with elaborate gilt decoration and beveled edges. Five high, raised bands on spine with gilt lettering and decoration. Green marbled end papers. lxxv, 344 pp., 165 BW woodcuts, 27 duotone etchings. AEG. "The Third Series of the Sacred and Legendary Art," originally begun by British writer Anna Brownell Jameson (1794-1860). Seeks to present and document the artistic depictions of the Madonna over the course of more than 1000 years. Binding by Bickers and Son, London, known for their elaborate leather bindings.
