Soft cover bound in tan and brown wrappers. Light wear to the binding. A sound copy and clean within. Illustrated with several text photos. Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955) was born in Maysville, South Carolina, the daughter of former slaves. She was one of the most important Black educators and civil and women's rights leaders of the early and mid 20th century. In 1894 she graduated from Scotia Seminary, a boarding school in North Carolina and then attended missionary school in Chicago. Eventually she moved to Florida where she opened a boarding school which became Bethune-Cookman College in 1929. She was a friend of Eleanor Roosevelt, and she was the highest ranking African-American woman in government when she became the director of Negro Affairs of the National Youth Administration. In 1940 she was the Vice-President of the NAACP.
