About This Item
Paris:: J.-B. Bailliere, 1859., 1859. Two volumes. 8vo. xvi, 524; 476 pp. Illustrations. Quarter brown morocco with marbled paper boards, gilt-stamped spine title with raised bands, original wrappers bound in. Fine. FIRST EDITION in a handsome binding. "Bernard's series of lectures on the liquids of the organism contains his first usage of the expression 'milieu' to express a controlled and constant internal environment (i.e., the blood) mediating between the life of the organism and its external environment. This fundamental physiological concept, for which he later coined the term 'milieu interieure,' would become as valuable to physiology as Darwin's theory of evolution (published the same year) was to biology. The work also presents Bernard's fourth and last major discovery in the field of animal experimentation, that the blood supply of secretory organs such as glands is regulated by vasomotor and vasoconstrictor nerves, which respond to the presence or absence of stimulus in the organ." [Norman]. GM 1234.1; Gascoigne 14851.4; Haskell Norman Library 203; Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1796; Osler 1510; Waller 963.
