About This Item

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1855. Leather. Very Good. 7" by 4.5". Not Stated. The eighth edition of William Edmondstoune Aytoun's famous Scottish ballads, handsomely bound in full morocco. The eighth edition of this work in a full morocco binding, with gilt detailing to the boards and spine. All edges gilt. Prize bookplate to the front paste down, dated 1858-9.William Edmondstoune Aytoun (1813-1865) was a Scottish poet, a lifelong contributor to the literary periodical Blackwood's Magazine, and a collector of Scottish ballads. This volume contains his lays of the Scottish Cavaliers and other miscellaneous poems including Blind Old Milton, The Old Camp and Hermotimus. From the library of the son of Joyce Gill, a life-long friend of Evelyn Waugh. Joyce and Evelyn had a passionate affair during the annulment of Evelyn"s first marriage to "She-Evelyn". The pair were introduced sometime around Christmas in 1923 at a nightclub in Fitzrovia, their affair seeming to come to a head in the summer of 1935, when Evelyn invited Joyce to leave her husband and join him on his travels to Abyssinia. In a full morocco binding. Externally fairly smart, though faded to the spine, with rubbing to the extremities and spine. Front hinge is slightly strained but held firmly. Pages are age toned to the page perimeters and are generally clean except for the odd handling mark. Faint tidemarks to the first and last few pages which may be due to pollution damage. Very Good
