A new edition of this work in a full calf prize binding, with gilt detailing to the boards, spine and square, and the gilt arms and motto of Horton Hall to the front board. Marbled edges and end papers. Binder's stamp of Henry Brown & Co to the verso of the front free end paper. Ink inscription to the front blank, awarding this volume as a prize at Horton Hall, dated 1895.A new edition of this notable collection of poems by Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-1859), comprising a selection of narrative poems, four of which narrate heroic episodes from early Roman history, dealing with dramatic and tragic events. Ivry and The Armada were inspired by more recent history. Each poem is introduced with a short description of the legends from which they were inspired. With an extensive preface by the author and forty-one illustrations by J. R. Weguelin. In a full calf prize binding. Externally smart, though faded, with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Gilt remains bright. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot. Very Good Indeed
