Photographs by O. Winston Link, 127 illustrations, including 24 plates in full color.In the mid-1950s the Norfolk and Western Railway began converting its operations from steam to diesel. Although the railroad ran some of the finest steam engines in the world and was a major coal-hauler, it decided to abandon steam. It was the last American railroad to do so. Here the railroad is caught in time by the famed photographer O. Winston Link. Link's black & white work is legend, but there are also 24 colorplates The endpaper photograph of engine 261 and its crew is so clear you can count every rivet. TRUE first edition with ISBN ending in 3575-9. As new, unread copy in dust jacket.
