First edition of The Last of the Lairds: Or, The Life and Opinions of Malachi Mailings, Esq. Of Auldbiggings by John Galt in half calf binding and marbled boards. Published anonymously as 'by the author of Annals of the Parish, The Entail, etc. John Galt was a nineteenth century Scottish author, entrepreneur, and political and social commentator. He is often credited as being the first political novelist in the English language as much of his work was the first to deal with the Industrial Revolution. He spent many years in Canada as the first superintendent of the Canada Company.Prior owner's ink inscription to the first free endpaper. In half calf binding and marbled boards. Externally, smart. There is some minor rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. The front hinge is cracked. There is some wear to the boards. The front hinge is starting but firm.
