Large paper edition, ex art school library with stamps, nothing obtrusive, remaining plates are all clean and crisp. Brown cloth. xvi, [4], 386, [1] pp., 39 (of 43) full-page illustrations and 7 exploratory pen-sketches. This is actually not totally about landscape painting per se, concentrating more on the effects of looking at the actual land upon the observer, but it does have a chapter on landscapes depicted in visual arts. Of the 43 full-page illustrations called for and observed through collation, 16 are original etchings, one is a mezzotint, two are line engravings (from list of illustrations). LACKS four etchings: Edmond Yon, Stephen Parrish, F. Slocombe and Heywood Hardy.

His first literary attempt, a volume of poems, was unsuccessful, leading him to devote himself for a time entirely to landscape painting; he camped out in the Scottish Highlands.
