About This Item
London: Cassell and Company, 1922. Cloth. Very Good. 9.5" by 7". Sir Frederick Treves. A travelogue of this beautiful region of Switzerland, with numerous photographic plates. The second impression of this travelogue, constructed by the author due to the lack of any works in English dealing 'from the point of view of the present-day traveller - with the Lake of Geneva as a whole'. Illustrated with one hundred plates of photographs taken by the author. This is the work of Sir Frederick Treves, a prominent British surgeon, and an expert in anatomy widely known for his friendship with Joseph Merrick, dubbed the 'Elephant Man' for his severe deformities. He is a main character in both the stage and screen adaptations of Merrick's life. Around 1920, Sir Frederick moved to Switzerland, where he authored this work. With a contemporary inscription to the front free endpaper dated 1927, giving the location of Lausanne-Ouchy, a port at the edge of Lake Geneva. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with some light marks to boards and bumping to spine head and tail. Spotting to text block fore edge. Contemporary inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting heaviest to first few pages, limited to page perimeters elsewhere. Very Good
