Signed by the Author on Half Title Page. illustrated with 16 black-and-white plates, indexed. The front end page is a facsimile of a playbill, and someone has written 6d in ink at the top right-hand corner. The half title page has a lengthy inscription by the author dated 27/11/57. Dustiness of the top edge of the text block, light rubbing of the base edge of the boards, and there are three short white lines at the lower right-hand corner of the front board. This is a book about the Actresses who have graced the stage of our country, a stage whose history is without rival in the world and which today still holds its premier position. When Charles II came into his own again, a travelled, experienced, and broadminded king, he reopened the theatres which had been closed, and at the same time he opened the door to women, and the English actress I arrived.
