About This Item
Copenhagen: Frisindet Kulturkamp, 1935-1939. Quarto (29.5 x 20 to 30.5 x 22 cm). Original side-stapled wrappers, most with eye-catching colorful illustrations; variously paginated (most issues between 16 and 48 pp.). Some light wear, very minor scattered browning, overall very good. A complete run of 33 issues in 28 fascicules of the Danish periodical with a Socialist viewpoint, devoted to all aspects of culture including architecture, housing, literature, music, theater, education and school policy, sexual emancipation and abortion, the Spanish Civil War, Nazism and other totalitarian systems, and other topics. The journal featured contributions by many of the eminent contemporary figures in Scandinavian, and particularly Danish, culture between the wars.
Contributors included writers and artists such as Edvard Heiberg, Elias Bredsdorff, Jorgen Jorgensen, Peter P. Rohde, Otto Gelsted, Hans Kirk, Kjeld Abell, Piet Hein, and Jens Otto Krag, and artists Hans Bendix, Herluf Bidstrup, Arne Ungermann, Marlie Brande, Ib Andersen, and Sikker Hansen. The issues are profusely illustrated throughout with drawings, caricatures, cartoons, photographs, collages, and charts.
This publication was at the center of the cultural radical movement, and prioritized free speech across ideological differences. Staunchly and outspokenly against Nazism, it aimed to combat Nazi propaganda while promoting humanist and democratic ideas. A very interesting compendium of material shedding great light on political and cultural developments in Scandinavia during the rise of totalitarianism in other parts of Europe.
Scarce; as of August 2023, KVK and OCLC show only four holdings in North America.
