Jonathan Cape, London, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Bright blue coloured bards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper with black and blue coloured titles to the front panels and blue and white coloured titles to backstrip. Kontakion -- Greek word meaning 'hymn to a saint'. This an elegy to Dorrie Paton, the authors' wife - who supported her husband, with devotion and humour through many trials and tribulations, including the transformation of Diepkloof Reformatory (a school for delinquent boys) and success after the publication of Cry, the Beloved Country, to name but two. When she died in 1967, from emphysema, Alan sat down and wrote this remembrance of Dorrie. Rubbing of the back strip edges and of the book corners. Age toning of the text block edges and pages. Faint offset tanning to the end pages; and, original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front paste-down. Some minor Chipping of the dustwrapper corners with rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels. Sunning of the back strip and to the rear panel. Browning and very faint foxing to the verso.
