London: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd, 1969. Hardcover. English translation by Gillian Hume and Paul Biegel. Illustrations by Babs Van Wely. Small 4to. Green cloth with gilt spine lettering and pictorial giltstamping, pictorial dust jacket. vi, 176pp. Numerous line drawings. Very good/very good. Binding corners ever-so-lightly bumped; jacket mildly rubbed; tight and internally fine. Handsome first English edition of this tale first published in Holland in 1965, where it won the Dutch Children's Book Prize. Tipped to front flyleaf is a 5" X 3" slip which the author boldly inscribes and signs in blue ballpoint: "For Mr. Hanlin / to read to his / grandchildren. / from / Paul Biegel / and / Cilia." Biegel (1925-2006) was an important and incredibly prolific Dutch author of children's books. A lovely copy with choice inscription.
