Synopsis

On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society is a book by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman exploring the psychology of the act of killing and the military establishment's attempt to understand and deal with the consequences of killing. The book proposes that contrary to popular perception, the majority of soldiers in war do not ever fire their weapons and that this is due to an innate resistance to killing.

This book details a subject which many writers and publishers find taboo. The author does an excellent job of exploring the psychology of the act of taking a life in a way that is both educational and interesting. While killing is not a topic often discussed, it should be. This book opened many doors in my subconscience and I would highly recommend it to any military and law enforcement personnel as required reading. It is a must read. I salute LtCol Grossman for this excellent work.
