An artist's catalogue produced by Kara Walker on the occasion of her exhibition "Presenting Negro Scenes Drawn Upon my Passage through the South and Reconfigured for the Benefit of Enlightened Audiences Wherever Such may be Found, by Myself, Missus K.E.B. Walker, Colored," at the Renaissance Society at The University of Chicago (Jan. 12 - Feb. 23, 1997). Reproduces both cut-outs and watercolors featured in the exhibition, along with a number of installation views, interspersed with a series of provocative texts from Walker, exploring her "Inner Plantation.

Synopsis

Kara Walker was born in Stockton, California. She received an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1994. In 1997, she received the MacArthur Foundation Achievement Award. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney. She is currently on the faculty of the MFA program at Columbia University.
