Description: This is a volume from the Notable Trials Library under the general editorship of Alan M Dershowitz who wrote a special introduction for this facsimile edition. This is a facsimile reprinting of a book published in 1964 by McGraw-Hill. Book design by Daniel B Bianchi and Selma Ordewer. From the introduction: ''Any fair listing of the great judges in American history -- indeed in world history -- would include the name of Justice Louis D Brandeis, who served with distinction on the United States Supreme Court from 1916 to 1939. The very name Brandies, like the name of Holmes, and perhaps a half-dozen others, signals benchmark of judicial excellence. In light of an unparalleled record of accomplishments, it is difficult to fathom the depth and breadth of opposition to President Woodrow Wilson's nomination of Mr. Brandeis from Boston to replace Mr. Justice Joseph Lamar, who had died in the middle of a term. The nomination was vociferously opposed by the elite of the American Bar Association, the Brahmin aristocracy of New England, assorted anti-Semites throughout the country, virtually the entire Republican Party, and the financial and business communities of both Wall Street and Main Street. This volume tells the intriguing story of the bitter struggle to confirm Brandies and how perilously close those involved came to denying the nation one of its most outstanding justices.''
