New York: Putnam, 1963. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. First US edition first printing 1963. Hardback book is tight clean and very square. Boards clean with nice sharp corners. Spine ends gently bumped, title gilt perfect. Text block clean, with white edges, top edge has touch of dustiness. The pages are crisp and unblemished. Feels very tight and hardly read. Fine condition. Jacket lovely, glossy, with bold colours to panels and spine. The spine has some very light creasing at ends. Rear panel is very white, with a few extremely feint marks. Jacket grades near fine. For grading accuracy books are photographed without a protective book cover. This book is fitted with a non adhesive archival quality book protector to make a worthy addition to your collection. Note we do not use stock images, the book pictured is the book described. A superb copy of this first printing book, uncommon in the UK. A scarce book especially in this excellent condition, feeling very tight and clean, with none of the sunning to the spine as is often found with this title. From the estate of Roger Earnshaw, SF collector, well known at British conventions and fandom.
Synopsis
This novel had its genesis in a much shorter story called "Graveyard of Dreams" (Galaxy, 1958) Piper expanded it to book length, and it appeared in 1963 as Junkyard Planet. Ace later renamed the book The Cosmic Computer for its paperback appearance. This edition returns the book to Piper's original title, Junkyard Planet.Conn Maxwell returns from Terra to his home world of Poictesme, dubbed "The Junkyard Planet" because of all the military equipment left behind after the last war. Conn claims he has found the location of Merlin, a military super-computer rumored to have been left behind. But is Merlin real, or just a myth? And will Conn’s knowledge of the computer save Poictesme -- or tear his world apart?
