About This Item

London: Henry Sampson Woodfall, 1772. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 6.5" by 4.5". Not Stated. A very smart copy of the infamous 'Letters of Junius', a collection of letters critical of the Hanoverian government, the first edition, second issue of this work. An interesting collection of private and openly published letters that criticised the Hanoverian government under King George III. Including sixty-nine letters in total, published by Henry Sampson Woodfall, the owner and editor of the London-based newspaper, the Public Advertiser. Written anonymously by an individual who referred to himself only as 'Junius'. Some have claimed Junius to be British politician and pamphleteer, Philip Francis, though his identity has never been officially confirmed. Complete in two volumes. Including an engraved frontispiece to each volume. The first authorised edition, in the second state, which includes the table of contents and index. Containing the bookplate of 'Baron de Spon' to the front pastedown. A scarce work in this edition. ESTC citation no. T29288. In full calf binding, rebacked with the original calf laid down on the boards. Externally, smart, with rubbing and shelf wear to the boards. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedowns of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, especially considering the age of the work. Very Good
