About This Item

2 volumes, large 8vo, original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, illustrated with 10 steel engravings, [2], cxxxi, 508; vii, 605 pp. Spines faded, spine ends frayed, edges and corners rubbed, a few spots of soiling to covers, a couple of tears on the top of spines, joints just a bit tender, normal aging, Salt Lake Temple donation bookplate on front endpapers; otherwise very good. This is an important first hand account of a journey across America from west to east. Wagner-Camp indicates that “Remy and his companion Julius Brenchley traveled from San Francisco to Salt Lake City in the summer of 1855… The Frenchman were fascinated by the Mormons, and much of this book is devoted to the new American religion.” However, unlike contemporary American accounts of the Mormons, Remy (1826-1893), and fellow European explorer Richard Burton, were far more objective in their commentary.
