Notes, maps, tables, illustrations, photographs, index. A previous owner's blind stamp on the half-title page in each volume. "The object of this work is to depict the life of the period in English history which may legitimately be described as the Age of Johnson. Johnson lived from 1709 to 1784; as a small child he was 'touched for the evil' by Queen Anne, and he lived into the third decade of the reign of George III, to see, a few months before his death, the triumphal election which established the Younger Pitt in power" - from the Preface.
