About This Item
(Cape Town: National Gallery of South Africa, 1955). 225 x 181 mm; saddle-stitched pictorial wrappers; pp. 14; plates. Very good condition. Uncommon catalogue of the work of this significant South African artist. Introductory material includes an essay by Cecil Higgs. John Marsden Dronsfield was largely self-taught, although he did study for a time at the Manchester Art School. In 1939 he settled in Cape Town, where he built a reputation as a set designer, particularly for ballet productions. A regular theme in his artworks is the life of the Cape Coloured people. "Dronsfield, the man, was a uniquely compassionate human being, inspiring intense devotion among his friends - who continued jealously to nurse his reputation after his death. He was a complex and troubled individual. 1951: death by suicide." - Berman: Art & Artists of South Africa .
